The American Society of Craniofacial Surgeons (ASCFS) is a national society that serves to furnish leadership and foster advances in craniofacial surgery. In order to ensure that every fellowship provides a comprehensive learning experience to fellows, the ASCFS has created a formal structure that enables each craniofacial fellowship program to earn accreditation status.
How does a craniofacial fellowship program earn ASCFS accreditation?
Each ASCFS-accredited fellowship program must satisfy the following requirements:
① Affiliation with an ACGME-accredited plastic surgery residency program
② Multiple teaching faculty
③ A minimum number of cases in 4 main categories (transcranial, maxillofacial, cleft, and pediatric plastic surgery) each year
④ A minimum number of total cases each year
When reviewing the craniofacial fellowship programs, the "accredited" designation signifies that the ASCFS has granted endorsement to the program following a comprehensive evaluation. This designation is important to consider when applying to a craniofacial fellowship.
Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ):
Upon completion of an ASCFS-accredited fellowship program, a fellow will be granted to opportunity to earn a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Craniofacial, Cleft, & Pediatric Plastic Surgery.
